Meta Pixel vs Conversions API: how are they different?

They're often sold as rivals or as a magic upgrade. In reality they're two different routes for sending event data to Meta — and understanding the difference helps you ask better questions about your own setup.

Two routes for the same events

When someone views a product, adds it to a cart, or completes a purchase on your website, your business may want Meta to know — so campaigns can be measured and optimized. That information is an event. The question is how the event travels from your website to Meta.

The browser route: Meta Pixel

Meta Pixel is code in the visitor's browser. When the event happens, the browser sends it. This is simple to install, but browsers are an unreliable postman: ad blockers, iOS privacy features, consent refusals and connection drops can all prevent delivery. If the browser doesn't send it, Meta never sees it.

The server route: Conversions API

Conversions API (CAPI) sends eligible events from a server — yours, your platform's, or a supported integration — directly to Meta. Because it doesn't depend on the visitor's browser surviving the journey, it can deliver events the browser route lost. It requires more setup: event definitions, parameters, and access must be configured properly.

Why they're often used together

Used together, the two routes can complement each other: the browser catches events in real time, the server provides a second delivery path. Where the same event arrives by both routes, deduplication — matching on an event ID — tells Meta it's one event, not two. Without dedup, you risk double-counting; without either route working properly, you risk blindness.

What neither route guarantees

  • Neither guarantees every conversion is captured or attributed.
  • Neither overrides a visitor's consent or privacy choices — and neither should be used to try.
  • Neither fixes badly defined events; sending the wrong event twice is still the wrong event.
  • Neither promises Meta's reports will match GA4 or your order system exactly.

The right setup depends on your platform, consent approach and what you need to measure. That's what a tracking review establishes — or start by asking your AI assistant with our prompt library.
