Why Meta Ads Manager and GA4 report different conversions

Three dashboards, three different totals — and every vendor blaming the others. Before assuming something is broken, understand why honest systems can disagree.

Difference is normal; chaos isn't

Meta, GA4 and your CRM were built for different jobs. Meta optimizes ad delivery, GA4 analyzes website behaviour, your CRM records business reality. Each applies its own rules — so identical totals would actually be suspicious. What matters is whether the differences are explainable.

Attribution: who gets the credit?

If someone clicks an ad on Monday, browses again from an email on Wednesday, and buys on Friday, which channel "caused" the sale? Meta's attribution settings might credit the ad click within its window. GA4's model might credit the last non-direct channel. Your CRM just records the order. Same sale, three stories — none of them lying.

Event definitions and windows

Totals diverge further when the events themselves differ: a "lead" in Meta might fire on a button click, while your CRM counts only qualified submissions. Reporting windows, time zones and processing delays add smaller gaps on top. Comparing systems without aligning definitions compares apples to invoices.

Visitors who decline tracking, block scripts, or use privacy-focused browsers may appear in your order system but not in analytics — legitimately. A gap caused by consent is the system working as intended, and no setup should be designed to defeat it.

The goal isn't identical numbers. It's knowing which number to use for which decision — and why.

Choosing a source of truth

Decide per question: platform data for in-platform optimization, analytics for site behaviour, your own records for revenue and lead quality. Then document the expected gaps so a difference triggers understanding, not panic. If your gaps are unexplainable — events missing entirely, parameters malformed, dedup absent — that's a real problem, and it's what our tracking setup service investigates.
